Lions Fight to the Final Out, Out-Hit Broncos in One-Run Thriller

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - In a back-and-forth battle that came down to the final inning, LMU softball came up just short in a 10-9 loss to Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field. Despite the result, the Lions showcased resilience throughout, out-hitting the Broncos 10-9 and mounting multiple late-game rallies to keep the contest within reach.

LMU struck first in the third inning, capitalizing on pressure at the plate to take a 2-0 lead, but Santa Clara answered with timely power hitting to even the score in the fourth. The Broncos continued to apply pressure in the middle innings, including a six-run sixth inning, but the Lions refused to back down.

Offensively, LMU delivered one of its most complete performances of the series, tallying 10 hits and consistently finding ways to manufacture runs. Avery Francis led the charge with a 3-for-4 day, including a double and two runs scored, while Justine Lambert added two hits and three runs. Rubi Lopez chipped in with a pair of hits, including a key RBI triple in the seventh that helped spark the Lions' final push.

Sydney Poole delivered in clutch moments, driving in a game-high five RBIs, highlighted by a two-run double that tied the game in the fifth inning and a sacrifice fly later in the contest.

A major storyline throughout the game – and the series – was Izzy Jamgotchian's presence at the plate. The Lions' catcher was walked in all four of her plate appearances on Saturday, extending her streak to eight consecutive walks against Santa Clara, as the Broncos have opted not to pitch to her all series long.

Trailing 10-7 entering the bottom of the seventh, LMU once again threatened. Sakora Harvell led off with a single before Lopez's triple cut the deficit to two. The Lions continued to apply pressure and brought the tying run across, but Santa Clara ultimately held on to secure the narrow victory.

Inside the circle, LMU utilized a staff approach with multiple pitchers seeing action, as the Lions worked to navigate a high-powered Santa Clara lineup.

LMU will look to bounce back in the series finale tomorrow, Sunday, March 29, with first pitch set for 12:00 PM at Smith Field.
