Francis Delivers Walk-Off, Hooks Returns as Lions Sweep Day at Smith Field

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Loyola Marymount softball delivered a pair of gritty performances at Smith Field on Saturday, rallying for a dramatic extra-inning win over Portland State before holding off Southern Utah later in the afternoon to complete the sweep and improve to 21-9 on the season.

Game 1: LMU 6, Portland State 5 (8 innings)
The Lions showed their resilience early in the day, overcoming a four-run first inning by Portland State to eventually walk it off in the eighth.

Portland State jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the opening frame, but LMU immediately began chipping away. In the second inning, Taelor Walker ignited the offense with a single and aggressive baserunning before Justine Lambert delivered a hit to move the rally along. Rubi Lopez followed with an RBI single to bring the Lions within two.

The Lions remained patient through the middle innings before delivering a clutch moment in the seventh. With two outs and a runner aboard, Izzy Jamgotchian launched a game-tying two-run home run to even the score at 4-4 and force extra innings.

Portland State briefly reclaimed the lead in the eighth, but LMU answered immediately. After Meeya Johnson tied the game with a sacrifice fly, Avery Francis delivered the decisive moment, lining a walk-off RBI single to score the winning run and complete the comeback victory.

Francis paced the offense with three hits, while Lambert also recorded three hits and scored twice in the win. Jamgotchian's late homer proved pivotal in shifting momentum back to the Lions.

In the circle, Sawyer Denser handled the bulk of the game, tossing seven innings before Lindsay O'Dell closed the door in the eighth to earn the win.

Game 2: LMU 3, Southern Utah 2
The Lions carried that momentum into the afternoon matchup with Southern Utah, using timely hitting and a strong pitching staff to secure the 3-2 victory.

LMU struck first in the second inning when Jaida Fulcher blasted a solo home run to put the Lions on the board. The Lions added to their lead in the fourth, stringing together solid at-bats that included an RBI single from Avery Francis and a run driven in by Meeya Johnson to make it 3-0.

Southern Utah attempted a late push, scoring runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but LMU's pitching staff held firm.

A bright moment came in the fifth inning when Savannah Hooks made her long-awaited return to the circle. Appearing in a game for the first time since the 2024 season due to injury, Hooks delivered a strong inning of work, striking out two batters and allowing no hits while helping maintain the Lions' lead.

Lindsay O'Dell started the contest with four solid innings, while Sara Pinedo closed out the final two frames to secure the win.

Offensively, LMU totaled eight hits, highlighted by a perfect 3-for-3 performance from Justine Lambert, while Francis added two hits and an RBI.

With the two victories, the Lions improve to 21-9 overall, continuing their strong season and building momentum as they move closer into conference play.
