Lions Split Day at Smith Field with Win Over Portland State

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Loyola Marymount softball split a pair of contests at Smith Field on Friday, opening the day with a convincing 5-1 victory over Portland State before falling 3-1 to Southern Utah in the evening matchup.

Game 1: LMU 5, Portland State 1
LMU used steady offense and a strong outing in the circle from Lindsay O'Dell to take the opener against the Vikings.

The Lions struck first in the second inning when Taelor Walker reached base and later came around to score on a heads-up sequence that included Justine Lambert swiping second and drawing a throw that allowed Walker to cross the plate for the early 1-0 lead. Portland State responded in the third to even the game at 1-1.

LMU quickly regained control in the fourth. After Scarlett Carlson reached base, Walker delivered another key hit before Lambert lined an RBI single down the left-field line to put the Lions back in front, 2-1.

The Lions continued to add insurance in the fifth inning. Izzy Jamgotchian and Sydney Poole recorded back-to-back singles to put runners in scoring position, allowing Rubi Lopez to drive in a run with a groundout before Walker followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-1. LMU tacked on one more in the sixth when Lambert singled and later scored on an RBI knock from Mya Allen.

O'Dell handled the rest in the circle, tossing a complete game and allowing just one run on five hits while striking out five to earn the win. Offensively, LMU tallied 12 hits, with Walker finishing 3-for-3 with an RBI and Lambert going a perfect 3-for-3 with a run, an RBI, and two stolen bases.

Game 2: Southern Utah 3, LMU 1
Southern Utah jumped out early in the nightcap and held off a late push from the Lions.

The Thunderbirds got on the board in the second inning before adding two more runs in the third to build a 3-0 advantage. LMU's pitching staff settled in from there, as Jessie Gilbert and O'Dell combined to hold Southern Utah scoreless over the final innings.

The Lions broke through in the fourth when Scarlett Carlson launched a solo home run, cutting the deficit to 3-1 and providing LMU's only run of the game.

LMU continued to put runners on base throughout the contest, collecting seven hits and drawing three walks, with Avery Francis and Justine Lambert each recording multi-hit efforts. However, Southern Utah's pitching limited the Lions' opportunities with runners in scoring position.

Angela Carrera was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs in the early innings, while the LMU bullpen kept the game within reach the rest of the way.

Up Next
With the split, LMU moves to 19-9 on the season and will look to build momentum on Saturday, March 14, when the Lions return to Smith Field for rematches against both Portland State and Southern Utah. First pitch of the day is scheduled for 10 AM.
