LOS ANGELES – Eight combined goals were scored in the first quarter and then another eight followed in the final three quarters as #9 LMU came from behind to defeat #12 UC Irvine. The Lions trailed at halftime and after three quarters before shutting out the Anteaters in the final period to win, 9-7.
 
After UC Irvine scored in the opening minute, Sophia DeMattia tied the score at 1-1 on LMU's next possession. After UCI jumped back on top, LMU's seniors scored the next two goals to take their first lead of the game as Anna Tarantino and DeMattia pushed LMU ahead 3-2. The Anteaters tied the score at 3-3 on a 6-on-5 before Carolina Magano netted two goals over the final three minutes to push the Lions ahead, 5-3, after one.
 
The 'Eaters scored all three second quarter goals to flip the score from two down to up one at the half, 6-5.
 
The second half began with another UCI goal as the visitors took a two-goal advantage. LMU's scoreless drought ended with Emison Styris' powerplay goal with less than two minutes on the third quarter clock to pull the Lions within one entering the final period.
 
The Lions tied the game with 4:31 to play in the fourth quarter as Magano completed her hat trick. The game-winning goal came from Styris with 3:53 on the clock with her second of the game. Tarantino added an insurance goal with 1:14 to play to secure the two-goal win.
 
Madison Searle made five saves with an assist and steal to earn the win in the cage.
 
The Lions will travel to UC San Diego for a Saturday night rematch against the Tritons from a week ago.
