Final Second Goal Lifts Lions to Second Fourth Quarter Comeback in a Row

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Emison Styris scored the game winning goal with one second to play to clinch the road win for #9 LMU over #12 UC San Diego. The Lions completed their second fourth quarter comeback in as many nights to defeat the Tritons, 9-8.

Sophia DeMattia and Kawehi Kauahi scored the game's first two goals to give LMU an early lead. After the home team got on the board, Brooke Tora Gil extended the lead to 3-1 in the final minute of the opening period.
 
UCSD scored twice in the first two minutes of the second to tie the game and added a go-ahead goal with 15 seconds to play before halftime after converting on a 6-on-5.
 
The Tritons built up a two-goal lead in the opening minute of the third quarter before Anna Tarantino cut LMU's deficit in half to make it a 5-4 game. UC San Diego scored with under three minutes to play with the period before Emison Styris responded on the next possession.
 
Stryris scored just 31 seconds into the fourth quarter to tie the game at 6-all. After the Tritons went back on top, Kauahi leveled the score with a powerplay goal with 1:16 showing on the clock. UCSD pushed ahead with 1:06 remaining in regulation before the freshman Styris took over. Styris scored with 42 seconds on the clock to the game at 8-8, then scored the game-winning goal with one tick showing following a timeout to secure victory with her fourth goal.
 
Madison Searle made eight saves in the cage for a .500 save percentage.
 
The Lions return home for their next four games, including Saturday's doubleheader and alumni game. LMU will host Chapman at Burns at 10:00 AM before hosting Cal State Fullerton at 4:00 PM on Feb. 14.
