Lions Rewrite the Record Books in Win Over USF

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - LMU women's basketball etched their name deeper into program history Thursday night, defeating the University of San Francisco 66-57 at the War Memorial at the Sobrato Center and rewriting multiple long-standing records in the process.

With the victory, the Lions improve to 20-8 overall, making them just the third team in program history to reach the 20-win mark. The only other LMU squads to do so were the 2000-01 team (21-10) and the historic 2003-04 team (24-6). This year's Lions have now officially joined that elite company.

Even more notably, LMU climbs to 14-3 in WCC play, setting a new program record for most conference wins in a single season. The previous record of 13 wins had stood untouched since the 2003-04 season, marking a monumental milestone for Head Coach Aarika Hughes' squad. Thursday's victory also extended LMU's winning streak to eight straight, the program's longest since, once again, the 2003-04 season.

On the court, LMU delivered a composed, resilient performance, closing the game with a dominant 25-point fourth quarter to pull away from the Dons. Jess Lawson led the Lions with 17 points and 7 rebounds, attacking the paint and sinking 11-of-14 from the free-throw line. Andjela Matic added 15 points, hitting four timely threes - including two pivotal ones in the fourth - to halt USF momentum. Allison Clarke chipped in 9 points, burying three three-pointers of her own, while Paula Reus Piza provided a crucial spark off the bench with 8 points and 5 rebounds.

Despite trailing 17-13 after the first quarter, LMU flipped the momentum with a strong defensive second frame, holding San Francisco to just 7 points. From there, the contest remained tight until the Lions' late surge. LMU's depth proved decisive, outscoring the Dons 25-17 in the final period and controlling the boards with a 42-45 rebounding battle that kept second-chance opportunities alive throughout.

Historically significant, gritty, and indicative of a team playing its best basketball in February, this win cements LMU's status as one of the top stories in the WCC.

Up next, the Lions close out their regular season on Saturday, February 28, traveling to face Oregon State University at 1 PM. After that, LMU will shift its focus to postseason play at the WCC Tournament, where they enter as one of the hottest teams in the conference.
