Lions Battle No. 6 Florida in Competitive 7-5 Finish

FULLERTON, Calif. - LMU softball went swing-for-swing with No. 6 nationally ranked Florida, pushing one of the nation's top teams across all seven innings before ultimately falling 7-5 on Friday evening at Anderson Field.

Florida jumped ahead early with two runs in the opening frame, but the Lions quickly responded when Izzy Jamgotchian blasted her fourth homer of the season - a solo shot to left - trimming the deficit to 2-1. Jamgotchian was one of LMU's top performers of the day, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run, 2 RBI, and a walk, continuing her strong offensive stretch.

LMU kept pace in the second with a sacrifice fly from Avery Francis to bring another run across, and the defense held firm in the third behind Lindsay O'Dell, who threw a complete game and recorded 13 fly-ball outs while limiting one of the country's most dangerous lineups to eight hits.

In the fifth, Sydney Poole delivered another key moment for the Lions, ripping an RBI double to center. Poole finished the evening 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI, and a walk, adding critical production in the heart of the order.

The Lions' biggest surge came in a momentum-shifting sixth inning, sparked by Justine Lambert, who opened the frame with a perfectly placed bunt single. LMU quickly applied pressure, putting runners in scoring position before Izzy Jamgotchian ripped a line-drive RBI single up the middle to pull the Lions within one. Moments later, pinch-hitter Meeya Johnson crossed the plate on a passed ball, completing the comeback and tying the game at 5-5. Lambert finished the day 2-for-4, with her early-inning bunt setting the tone for LMU's late rally.

Florida regained the lead in the seventh on a two-run homer, and despite the late-game fire, the Lions were unable to mount one final answer in the bottom half.

LMU totaled seven hits, four RBI, and consistently pressured Florida's top-tier pitching staff - an effort marked by timely hitting, aggressiveness on the bases, and a complete team push from start to finish.

The Lions will return to action tomorrow, Feb. 28, for a 12:30 PM matchup against BYU.
