Lions Split Saturday Action at Mary Nutter Classic, Topping Utah Before Battling No. 13 Texas A&M

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - LMU softball delivered a strong showing in Saturday's doubleheader at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, opening the day with an impressive 7-5 victory over Utah before closing the night with a hard-fought 7-1 setback against No. 13 Texas A&M. The Lions showcased power, poise, and resilience across both contests, continuing to build momentum during a demanding weekend slate.

LMU set the tone early in the opener against Utah, striking in the bottom of the first when Avery Francis reached on an infield single and Izzy Jamgotchian followed by blasting a two-run homer to right, giving the Lions an immediate 2-0 lead. The offense erupted again in the third, stringing together one of their most explosive innings of the season. Sydney Poole led off with a line-drive single before LMU applied pressure with disciplined, timely at-bats. Mina Lei Tala drove home a run with an RBI fielder's choice, and Justine Lambert dropped a well-executed bunt single to extend the lead to 4-0. Moments later, Cristina Jones delivered the swing of the game, a three-run shot to left-center that pushed the advantage to 7-0.

Utah mounted a late push, scoring once in the fourth and rallying for four more in the seventh, but LMU's pitching staff held firm. After Sawyer Denser worked through three challenging innings in relief, Lindsay O'Dell entered with the tying run at the plate and calmly recorded the final two outs, securing her second save of the season and sealing the 7-5 win. The Lions finished with seven hits from seven different players, with Jamgotchian and Jones combining for five RBIs and LMU improving to 12-1 on the year.

In the nightcap, LMU faced its toughest test of the day against a top-15 opponent and put together another competitive effort despite falling 7-1. The Lions kept the early innings tight through steady defense and composed pitching, working out of pressure situations and generating baserunners of their own. The breakthrough came in the sixth when Jamgotchian once again provided the offensive spark, turning on a pitch and sending a solo home run to left, the Lions' lone run of the game and her second long ball of the day.

Taelor Walker was a bright spot at the plate, going 2-for-3 with consistent, quality contact, while Analiah Lummus added another hit as LMU totaled four against a nationally respected pitching staff. In the circle, O'Dell carried the bulk of the workload with four innings of determined effort before handing the ball to Sara Pinedo, who closed the final two frames while allowing just one run and preventing the game from widening further.

Though LMU couldn't mount a late rally, the Lions continued to compete with toughness and intent through every inning, showing the same resilience and togetherness that have defined their early-season surge. The nightcap closed out a demanding doubleheader against elite competition, providing valuable experience as LMU continues through tournament play.
