Pinedo’s Career-High 9 Strikeouts Power Lions Past Saint Francis

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The LMU softball team continued their strong start to the season on Saturday afternoon at John C. Funk Stadium, rolling past Saint Francis 9-1 behind a dominant performance in the circle from freshman Sara Pinedo and a 15-hit offensive showcase.

After a pair of scoreless innings to open the game, the Lions broke through in the third. Mya Allen sparked the rally with a bunt single before Avery Francis used her speed to pressure the defense. Izzy Jamgotchian delivered an RBI single to center to plate the first run, and Sydney Poole followed with a run-scoring single of her own to give LMU a 2-0 lead.

Saint Francis answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but it would be the only damage of the day, and it came unearned, as Pinedo quickly settled back in. The freshman right-hander was in complete control, tossing a full seven innings, allowing just four hits and one unearned run while striking out a career-high nine batters in a commanding complete-game effort improving to 2-0 on the season.

The Lions created separation in the fourth inning with a four-run surge. Scarlett Carlson launched a solo home run to center to ignite the frame, and LMU capitalized on multiple Red Flash errors to extend the lead. Francis added a sacrifice fly, Poole ripped an RBI double, and Taelor Walker drove in another run with a single up the middle as LMU pushed ahead 6-1.

LMU continued to apply pressure late, adding a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Carlson came through again with an RBI single, and pinch hitter Kiley Caster delivered a run-scoring knock to cap the scoring at 9-1.

At the plate, the Lions were relentless, finishing with 15 hits compared to just four for Saint Francis. Poole (3-for-4, two RBI), Walker (3-for-4, one RBI), Carlson (2-for-4, three RBI), and Jamgotchian (2-for-5, one RBI) led a balanced offensive attack as LMU improved to 9-1 on the season.

Behind Pinedo's breakout performance and a disciplined, opportunistic offense, the Lions once again showcased their depth and momentum as they continue their early-season run in Riverside. LMU will wrap up the weekend at John C. Funk Stadium tomorrow evening with a 5:30 PM matchup against the University of Hawaii, looking to carry their strong form into the final game of the trip.
