Lions Rally Twice, Complete Friday Sweep in Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The LMU softball team put together a resilient and explosive Friday at John C. Funk Stadium, sweeping their two-game slate with a 6-3 extra-inning comeback win over Utah State followed by a 9-5 victory over CSU Bakersfield to improve to 8-1 on the season.

In the morning matchup, the Lions found themselves in an early hole after Utah State struck in the first and added another run in the third, capitalizing on a pair of LMU miscues to take a 2-0 lead. Despite generating traffic on the bases, LMU was held scoreless through six innings before finally breaking through in the seventh.

The comeback began with disciplined at-bats and aggressive baserunning. A pair of singles and a Utah State error allowed the Lions to even the score at 2-2 in the top of the seventh, forcing extra innings and swinging the momentum firmly in LMU's favor.

In the eighth, the Lions erupted. A leadoff RBI single from Mina Lei Tala ignited the rally before Taelor Walker dropped down a bunt single to apply pressure. Analiah Lummus delivered the decisive blow with a two-RBI double to left, and Jaida Fulcher followed with an RBI single to cap a four-run frame that gave LMU a commanding 6-2 advantage.

Inside the circle, LMU relied on a composed bullpen effort. Starter Angela Carrera went 2.1 innings before Jessie Gilbert steadied the game in relief, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out four. Lindsay O'Dell closed the door over the final two innings, earning her fourth win of the season while allowing just one unearned run and striking out two to secure the 6-3 comeback victory.

The afternoon contest presented another early challenge. CSU Bakersfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead and later regained a 5-4 edge in the fourth inning. Once again, however, the Lions responded with composure and timely hitting.

LMU answered with a three-run second inning highlighted by Izzy Jamgotchian's two-RBI double to tie the game, and continued to chip away as the offense found its rhythm. Jamgotchian delivered a standout performance, finishing 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three doubles, while Avery Francis added two hits, two runs scored, and two stolen bases to spark the offense at the top of the lineup.

After Bakersfield took a 5-4 lead in the fourth, Jamgotchi struck again with an RBI double to even the score at 5-5. The Lions then broke the game open in the sixth inning. Sydney Poole drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single before Taelor Walker cleared the bases with a two-RBI triple to center. An RBI groundout from Rubi Lopez capped a four-run inning that pushed LMU ahead 9-5.

In the circle, LMU once again relied on depth and poise. Jessie Gilbert provided 3.1 innings of relief with four strikeouts to keep the Lions within reach before O'Dell entered and dominated down the stretch. O'Dell tossed 3.2 shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two to earn her fifth win of the season and seal the Friday sweep.

Across the two contests, LMU dominated at the plate, outhitting their opponents 24-13 while displaying both grit and explosive offense. The Lions rallied from early deficits in each game, pairing timely hitting with lockdown pitching to cap off an impressive, statement-making sweep in Riverside.

Up next, the Lions will return to action tomorrow as they face Saint Francis University at 2:00 PM, looking to carry their momentum into another strong showing at the CBU Classic.
