LOS ANGELES – Both LMU and Queens held double-digit leads at different points in the game on Wednesday night's high-scoring affair. The two teams combined for 191 total points as the Royals edged out the Lions, 96-95.
The first basket of LMU's 2026-27 season was a knockdown three from
Jasai Miles. Queens responded with the next nine points before
All Wright stopped the run with a midrange jumper and
Zion Sensley followed with a three of his own to make it a one-point game.
Queens built up a double-digit lead with five minutes remaining in the opening half. From there, LMU closed out the half with a 22-9 run to take a 53-50 lead to the locker room. Both teams shot above 60 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes of play.
The Royals scored the first six points after intermission to retake their lead.
Andy Sigiscar helped keep the Lions in it, scoring each of LMU's first three baskets of the first half. Sigiscar finished with a 15 and 10 double-double in his first game with LMU.
Wright hit a three with 14:56 to play to give LMU a two-point advantage. After back-to-back baskets by the visitors the Lions rattled off a 16-2 run sparked by another Wright three. The run pushed LMU ahead by a dozen, 78-66, with 10 minutes to play.
Queens began their comeback bid over the next four minutes, cutting their deficit to just three with 6:20 to play. LMU built back their lead to seven after Wright knocked down his fourth three of the night with 3:22 remaining.
The visitors ended the game on an 11-3 run, including scoring the final six points of the game, to turn the result inside out. The only LMU basket over the final three minutes was a three off the hands of
Jevon Porter as part of his 17 points.
Sensley and Wright each finished with identical 22-point efforts to lead the Lions. Both players hit four threes and were a perfect 6-for-6 from the line for the game.
LMU's 60 percent (18-for-30) first half shooting dipped down to 50 percent for the game (31-for-62), while Queens finished at 58.3 percent (35-for-60) on the night. 56 of the Royals' points came in the paint.
The Lions will have a quick turnaround, and face Lincoln on Friday night at home. The two teams played in last year's season opener, with LMU winning 137-54.
