LOS ANGELES — LMU defeated Pacific 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-17) on Saturday at Gersten Pavilion. The Lions hit .385 with 39 kills and held Pacific to a .086 hitting percentage with 25 kills. The Lions recorded a season-high hitting percentage of .385 in the game.
Maria Tabacuks led the LMU attack with a team-high 14 kills on a season-high .600 hitting percentage while totaling a team-high 17.5 points and adding seven digs. Tabacuks has now recorded at least 14 kills in seven consecutive matches.
Delfina Schuh directed the Lions offensively with a team-high 25 assists while adding four kills on five errorless attempts, two service aces and six digs. Schuh has now recorded at least 25 assists in six straight matches.
Zaria Thornton was perfect offensively, recording three kills on three attempts for a 1.000 hitting percentage while adding two blocks.
Anya Santrac contributed six kills, four digs, three assists and one block.
Loyola Marymount University built a 7-4 lead in the opening set behind early kills from
Maria Tabacuks,
Nicole Schuetz and
Aleksandra Stojanovic, along with a Tabacuks block. After Pacific got within 7-4, the Lions won seven of the next eight rallies, using back-to-back Schuetz aces, a
Delfina Schuh kill, and three Tabacuks kills to stretch the lead to 14-5. The Lions continued to separate after a Schuetz kill and a Tabacuks ace made it 19-8, and after Pacific scored twice, Loyola Marymount University answered with four straight points with
Kayla Lopez serving to move ahead 23-10. Pacific scored four straight points after the Lions reached 24-11, but Ellie Prindl's service error closed the set at 25-15.
The second set stayed tight early, with Tabacuks putting down two kills and Schuh adding a service ace as the Lions traded points with Pacific until Nicole Zake's kill gave the visitors a 7-6 edge. Stojanovic answered with a kill to tie it, and Loyola Marymount University moved in front behind kills from Schuh and Tabacuks before
Gabriella Cascione's ace made it 11-8. Schuh added another ace and set up
Zaria Thornton for a kill as the Lions stretched the margin to 14-10, and
Anya Santrac's kill helped push the lead to 17-11. Pacific cut the deficit to 21-18, but Tabacuks stopped the run with a kill, Schuh combined on a block and then closed the set with a kill for a 25-18 LMU win.
The Lions led 4-3 early in the third set before winning seven of the next eight rallies, with kills from Thornton, Schuetz, Santrac and Stojanovic helping push the advantage to 11-4. Pacific took the next three points to get within 11-7, but Santrac answered with a kill and Loyola Marymount University kept control as Schuh and Tabacuks added kills during the middle stretch. After Pacific moved within 15-10, Schuetz put down a kill, Thornton and Santrac combined on a block, and Tabacuks served an ace to move the Lions ahead 18-10. Pacific later scored four straight points to close to 21-15, but Tabacuks and
Camille Pomeroy delivered late kills as Loyola Marymount University finished the set 25-17.
The Lions achieved a season-high of 8 serve aces in the game. They are 13-2 overall and 4-0 in West Coast Conference play. Pacific is 4-12 overall and 0-4 in WCC play.
