LOS ANGELES — LMU played Santa Clara to a 1-1 tie Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Field.
Cameron Bourne scored on her only shot, putting the attempt on goal for a two-point performance.
Ane Joergensen recorded the assist on the Lions' goal, her first assist of the season.
JJ Hoover played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with eight saves, making four in each half.
The Lions fell behind in the 15th minute when Santa Clara's Adee Goulden scored off assists from Addie Whitehouse and Malia Yamamoto, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. Earlier, the Lions generated early pressure with a
Sydney Schuler shot, a corner kick and a
Mia York attempt in the opening three minutes. LMU continued to look for a response through
Elise Bolanos, Schuler and
Kaela Standish, but Santa Clara held the Lions scoreless while finishing the half with a 13-5 shot advantage.
JJ Hoover made four saves after the goal, including three between the 33rd and 39th minutes, and the Lions went into halftime trailing 1-0.
Bourne gave the Lions the half's key breakthrough at 50:37, scoring off Joergensen's assist to bring the match level at 1-1. Joergensen flew in from her position at right back and whipped in a pinpoint cross and found the forehead of Bourne. Bourne glanced the ball towards goal and left the Broncos keeper rooted to the spot as the ball nestled into the back of the net.
Santa Clara put LMU under sustained pressure after that, forcing
JJ Hoover into a save at 51:49 and producing two more attempts around a corner in the 56th minute. The Lions' next recorded shot came from
Mia York at 76:14, while Hoover continued to handle Santa Clara's chances late. Hoover made three saves in the final seven minutes, including a stop at 89:38 before a Santa Clara corner, and the Lions finished the half with the match still tied 1-1.
The draw has a massive impact on the West Coast Conference standings as both teams move into a tie for second place.
Up next, the Lions travel to Malibu, California, to face Pepperdine on Saturday, Oct. 17, at noon. The Waves are currently sitting at the top of the standings.
