Lions Earn Overtime Win to Advance in Triton Invitational

LA JOLLA, Calif. - #9 LMU took down a GCC opponent in a non-conference early-season matchup against #19 San Diego State. The Lions scored all three overtime goals to defeat the Aztecs, 13-10, in the opening round game of the UC San Diego Triton Invitational.

San Diego State scored first before Brooke Tora Gil capitalized on a 6-on-5 to even the score on LMU's next possession. After the Aztecs retook the lead, Tora Gil again responded with a powerplay goal on the ensuing Lions possession. SDSU scored the final two goals of the first quarter to take a 4-2 lead.

Cianne Benjamin scored the first three goals of the second quarter to flip the two-goal deficit into a one-goal lead. After the Aztecs tied the game at 5-all, Emison Styris pushed LMU ahead with 47 seconds remaining before halftime. San Diego State leveled the score at 6-6 with their goal with 21 ticks left in the half.

Only one goal was scored between the two teams in the third quarter, giving SDSU a slight lead heading into the final period of regulation.

Benjamin and Anna Tarantino gave LMU an 8-7 lead with 3:49 to play after opening the fourth quarter with the first two goals. San Diego State responded with the next two goals for another lead change. Sophia DeMattia evened the score at 9-9 with 2:13 to play in the fourth before SDSU jumped ahead with 1:41 to play. Following a timeout from LMU, Tora Gil tied the game with 1:14 on the clock to force overtime.

The Lions dominated the extra periods as Emison Styris and Chelsea Issac each scored with less than two minutes to play in the fifth period. Tora Gil then added her fourth goal of the game to secure victory in the second overtime.
