LOS ANGELES – LMU battled hard but fell to No. 21 USC, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon inside Gersten Pavilion.

The Lions opened strong, rallying back from an early 8-2 deficit in the first set. A 5-0 run capped by a service ace from Maddie Boerstra put them within striking distance, and a late push sparked by a Sophie Stephenson kill gave LMU its first lead of the set. Stephenson sealed it with another kill to secure the opener, 25-23.

The momentum shifted in set two, as USC jumped out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back. Despite kills from Cecily Bramschreiber and Delfina Schuh, the Trojans controlled the set and evened the match, 25-14. USC carried that dominance into the third, taking it 25-13.

In the fourth, LMU struck first, but USC responded with seven straight points to take control. The Lions fought back to within one at 11-10 after another Stephenson kill assisted by Schuh, but the Trojans answered with key runs down the stretch to close out the set, 25-18, and the match, 3-1.

The Lions return to action on Saturday, Sept. 6, when they face Florida Gulf Coast in Tempe, AZ.
