SANTA CLARA, CA - The Lions dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Santa Clara, falling 5–4 in game one and 7–5 in game two.
Game One:
After two quiet innings, LMU got on the board in the third.
Justine Lambert singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a hit from
Jasmine Sofowora. A fielding mistake on
Mika Chong's second hit of the game let Sofowora come home, putting LMU up 2–0.
Santa Clara answered right away, tying it with a two-run single and a throwing error. The Broncos took control in the fourth with three more runs, including a two-run triple that made it 5–2.
LMU made a push in the fifth. Lambert and
Arianna Jaurequi reached on errors, and after hits from Sofowora and
Izzy Jamgotchian, Chong came through again with a two-run single to cut the lead to one. But a hard lineout turned into a double play and ended the threat.
Jessica Hubbard came in to pitch and kept the Broncos scoreless the rest of the way, but the Lions couldn't get anything going in the final two innings and went down in order.
Game Two:
The Lions struck early in the first. Lambert reached on an error and later scored on a foul out by Sofowora. In the second, LMU got three hits, with
Emma Gutierrez hitting a double to bring in
Analiah Lummus and make it 2–1.
After Santa Clara tied it with a solo homer, LMU answered in the fourth when Chong crushed a solo home run to put the Lions back on top, 3–2.
But the bottom of the fourth was rough for LMU. A mix of errors, hit batters, and timely hits gave Santa Clara five runs—only two of them earned—making it 7–3.
The Lions kept fighting in the seventh. They loaded the bases, and
Sakora Harvell came through with a big hit to drive in two runs. But with two outs and the tying run at the plate, LMU couldn't finish the comeback.
The Lions and Broncos will wrap up the series tomorrow at 12 PM in Santa Clara.
