MALIBU, Calif. - LMU Baseball erupted for 16 runs and 13 hits in a dominant 16-1 road win over Pepperdine on Thursday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Lions (25-27, 12-10 WCC) plated runs in five different innings and broke the game open with a seven-run eighth. LMU's offensive outburst was powered by Beau Ankeney, who finished 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and four RBIs. Devan Ornelas also delivered a three-run homer, while Nate Savoie added a solo shot of his own.
LMU opened the scoring in the first when Ankeney singled and came around to score on a double from Robbie Ayers, who later crossed the plate on an RBI single from Zion Williams to give the Lions an early 2-0 lead.
In the third, LMU capitalized on a pair of hit batters and a Pepperdine passed ball to extend its lead to 4-0.
After the Waves (12-40, 7-15 WCC) got on the board in the fourth, the Lions responded with a solo homer from Savoie in the fifth and then exploded for four runs in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run single from Cam Hassert and Ankeney's two-run blast, his 15th of the season.
LMU's bats stayed hot in the eighth, scoring seven runs on six hits. Ankeney's two-RBI double, Williams' RBI single, and Ornelas' towering three-run shot capped the offensive showcase.
On the mound, the Lions were equally impressive. Zack Mack started with 3.0 scoreless innings, while Austin Schroeder earned the win in relief. Jake Geis tossed 3.0 shutout frames, and Kenji Pallares closed it out with a scoreless eighth.
In total, the Lions drew three walks, stole four bases, and had eight different players record a hit. Williams (2-for-5, 3 RBIs), Ayers (1-for-2, 2 HBP, RBI), and Colby Wallace (2-for-4, SB) were among several contributors in a complete team win.
LMU will continue the weekend series against the Waves on Friday in Malibu.
