LOS ANGELES — USC scored seven runs in the ninth inning to pull away from LMU and secure a 14-6 non-conference win Saturday afternoon at Page Stadium.
The Lions trailed by just one run entering the final frame, but the Trojans capitalized on a pair of LMU errors, a balk, and five hits to blow the game open.
LMU cut into an early 4-0 deficit with two runs in the first, then chipped away with a solo homer by Nate Savoie in the third and a solo shot by Kolton Freeman in the fourth to make it 7-4. Freeman reached three times and scored twice.
The Lions drew within one run in the eighth after three USC errors and a wild pitch allowed two unearned runs to score, trimming the Trojans' lead to 7-6. But the Lions were held scoreless in the ninth and couldn't keep pace with the late USC surge.
Offensively, Zion Williams had two hits, while junior DJ Ghiorso went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Redshirt freshman JD Dunn walked and scored in the first and stole his 10th base of the year.
