Offensive Explosion Late Sees Lions to Huge Victory

LOS ANGELES – LMU broke open a tight game with a seven-run seventh inning, cruising past Pacific 13-3 on Saturday afternoon at Page Stadium.

The Lions (16-15, 4-4 WCC) scored in five of the first seven innings, using timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, and a big swing from Joe Reid to pull away. Reid blasted a three-run homer to left field in the seventh inning, extending a 6-3 lead into a commanding 9-3 advantage. He finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

LMU took a 1-0 lead in the first when Zion Williams lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Cam Hassert. In the second, DJ Ghiorso walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Reid's RBI groundout. Hassert singled, stole second, advanced to third on another wild pitch, and scored on a groundout in the fourth to make it 3-1.

The Lions pushed their lead to 5-1 in the fifth after Williams reached on a single and advanced on a fielding error. Devan Ornelas laid down a bunt single, then Ghiorso singled up the middle to score both runners.

After Pacific cut the deficit to 5-3 with a two-run homer in the sixth, LMU answered immediately in the bottom half. Colby Wallace walked, moved to second on a bunt, and scored on Nate Savoie's RBI double to left, giving LMU a 6-3 cushion.

The floodgates opened in the seventh. Ornelas reached on a bunt single and Ghiorso walked before Reid launched his three-run homer to left. The Lions weren't done. Hassert was hit by a pitch and came home on Beau Ankeney's triple to right center. Robbie Ayers followed with a double down the left-field line to bring in Ankeney, then stole home on a double steal with Williams. Ornelas capped the inning with an RBI single to center, plating Williams for the final run.

Ornelas finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Ghiorso scored three times and knocked in two. Hassert reached base four times and scored three runs, while Ankeney tripled and walked twice.

On the mound, Zach Bender allowed three runs over 5.2 innings before Cole Stucky and Sam Brady combined to shut the door. The Tigers stranded eight runners and were held scoreless in six of the seven innings, managing just one extra-base hit.

The Lions and Tigers will meet to decide the series on Sunday, April 6.
