MORAGA, Calif. - LMU (23-21, 10-7 WCC) used a ninth-inning rally and key pitching performances to claim a 6-5 comeback win over Saint Mary's (21-20, 6-8 WCC) on Saturday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.Â
The Lions trailed 4-2 entering the top of the ninth before exploding for four runs. Joe Reid led off with a single, and Cam Hassert was hit by a pitch to put two runners aboard. Senior Beau Ankeney then delivered the biggest swing of the afternoon, launching a three-run homer down the left field line to give LMU a 5-4 lead. Two batters later, Robbie Ayers added an important insurance run with a solo home run to right field, extending the advantage to 6-4.Â
Saint Mary's answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to pull within one, but Zack Mack shut the door, inducing a double play and groundout to preserve the win and earn his fourth save of the season.Â
Hassert reached base three times with a single, a walk, and two hit-by-pitches, adding a stolen base. Reid finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored to help fuel the late surge. Nate Savoie added a pair of doubles as part of LMU's nine-hit effort.Â
On the mound, Avery Laine worked the first four innings, and Adam Behrens kept LMU close with three strong frames of scoreless relief. Jacob Hughes (2-0) earned the win after a perfect eighth inning with a strikeout.Â
The Lions and Gaels will wrap up the series on Sunday afternoon.Â
