Lions Claim Back-To-Back Regular Season Championships with Second Straight Unbeaten Season

LOS ANGELES – LMU Women's Water Polo has won 16 consecutive conference games and for the second season in a row has earned a Golden Coast Conference Regular Season Championship thanks to a dominating 20-5 win on Thursday over California Baptist University.

A pair of seniors scored the game's first two goals as Yanah Gerber and Ruth Arino Ruiz gave LMU an early 2-0 lead just over two minutes into the game. After CBU scored their only goal of the first quarter, the Lions rattled off five in a row to close the opening period and take a commanding 7-1 lead. Arino Ruiz, Anna Tarantino, Sophia DeMattia, Mikayla Lopez, and Taylor Enright all scored in the first period.

The lead grew to 10-1 after LMU's defense did not allow a second quarter goal. DeMattia, Tarantino, and Gerber each scored their second goals of the game to give the Lions a nine-goal cushion at intermission.

Skye Nankervis gave the Lions a double-digit lead just over a minute into the second half with her even-strength goal. After the Lancers scored their second of the day, Arino Ruiz and Gerber each completed her hat trick with their third goals each. Freshman Sydney Chapman extended the lead to 14-2 at 3:04 remaining in the third quarter. CBU would score back-to-back goals in less than a minute before fellow freshman Cianne Benjamin closed out the half with her first of the day.

The Lancers opened the final period with a goal 56 seconds into play, but would not score again for the remainder of the game. Arino Ruiz added two more goals in the fourth quarter to become the second LMU player all-time to score 100+ goals in a single season. With her five goals on Thursday, Arino Ruiz now has 102 on the season. DeMattia totaled five points with her third goal of the game along with two assists. Nankervis and Sophie made it a 20-5 final as LMU clinched sole possession of first place in the conference.
