Lions and Toreros Trade Wins in Saturday Action

LOS ANGELES – The Lions split Saturday's doubleheader against the San Diego Toreros, taking game one with a 14-3 win before falling 9-0 in the second game.

Game one:

LMU struck early in the opener, with Justine Lambert leading off the bottom of the first with a single, swiping second, and scoring on an RBI double from Arianna Jaurequi. The momentum continued with back-to-back RBI doubles from Izzy Jamgotchian and Mika Chong, giving the Lions a quick 4-0 advantage.

After a scoreless second, LMU's offense exploded in the third. With the bases loaded and two outs, Jaurequi crushed a grand slam, stretching the lead to 8-0.

USD responded with a two-run triple in the top of the fourth, but the Lions answered immediately, plating six more runs on five hits. Jasmine Sofowora drove in two, and both Jada Fulcher and Jaurequi added RBIs to put the game out of reach.

The Toreros pushed in the fifth, but Jessica Hubbard and the LMU defense held firm to close out the win.

Game two:

USD scored first in the first inning with a pair of runs on four singles. Hubbard worked around some traffic but couldn't escape without damage. The visitors extended their lead to 4-0 in the second, prompting a pitching change as Lindsay O'Dell came on in relief.

While the Lions defense had a few solid moments, San Diego kept the pressure on. A costly error in the fourth helped fuel a three-run frame, putting the Lions in a deeper hole at 7-0.

LMU's offense struggled to break through. Sakora Harvell reached base twice, walking in both the first and third innings and adding a stolen base, but the Lions couldn't drive her in. Jamgotchian also drew a pair of walks and was consistent on base, but the Lions still couldn't convert.

The Lions made several defensive adjustments throughout the game, but the rally never came. The Toreros tacked on two more runs in the sixth, putting the game out of reach.

The series concludes tomorrow at 2 PM at Smith Field.
