Freeman Stays Hot in Loss to Bears

WACO, Tex. - The LMU baseball team fell to Baylor 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Tex.

The Lions took a brief lead in the third inning thanks to the white-hot bat of Kolton Freeman and freshman Nate Savoie.

Freeman went 2-for-4 in the matchup and is hovering right around a .500 batting average on the season. Freeman was third in the country in on base percentage heading into the weekend matchup and carried a top ten batting average.

Cam Hassert singled on a bouncing ball in the infield and advanced to second when DJ Ghiorso walked. Freeman lined the first pitch he saw into left field for an RBI single. Savoie followed him with a hard grounder past a diving third baseman to plate Ghiorso from second and give the Lions a 2-1 lead.

The Bears answered with one in the bottom half of the third and one in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead.

Baylor took a commanding lead with three runs in the seventh inning, but the Lions continued to battle with a run in the eighth.

Nate Savoie registered his third hit of the evening with a single through the left side. Noah Malone stepped up the plate and drilled a line drive single down the left field line that made its way into the corner. Savoie motored around and scored from first and Malone stood up on second base with an RBI double.

Head coach Donegal Fergus thrust Matt Moreno into the starting role at shortstop on Saturday, marking the true freshman's first collegiate start. He recorded a sacrifice bunt as well as a single over the second baseman to earn his first career hit. An eventful week for the young man as he recorded his first career save on the mound on Tuesday against California Baptist.

The Lions are back to finish the series against the Bears on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 a.m. (PT).
