10 Lions Score Goals in Dominant Win Over Santa Clara

LOS ANGELES – The LMU women's water polo team led 5-0 and then 9-1 in a dominant win over Santa Clara to move to 5-0 in the Golden Coast Conference. The #T-11 Lions topped the Broncos, 17-7.
 
Yanah Gerber set the tone from the start, scoring the first three goals of the game. LMU extended the lead to 5-0 as Carolina Magano and Sophia DeMattia made it a 5-0 game. After Santa Clara got on the board, Ruth Arino Ruiz converted a penalty shot and Magano scored again late to give the Lions a 7-1 lead after the opening eight minutes.
 
Gerber scored her fourth goal of the game less than two minutes into the second quarter. Arino Ruiz pushed the lead to 9-1 at the 5:49 mark of the second period. The Broncos scored two of the final three goals of the half, with Skye Nankervis scoring for LMU.
 
Cianne Benjamin extended the lead to 11-3 to open the third period. The two sides then traded off scoring the next four goals as Arino Ruiz and Sophie Kadifa each answered goals from the visitors with goals of their own. LMU scored three even strength goals over the final four minutes as Kawehi Kauahi, Sophia DeMattia, and Karissa Elliott all found the back of the cage.
 
Santa Clara pulled back within 10 goals before the midway point of the fourth before Dunara Senadheera extended the lead back to 11. The Broncos added a final goal with 1:06 remaining to make it a 17-7 final.
 
Alyssa Barnuevo made five saves and allowed three goals in her 16 minutes in the cage. Tatum Roistacher also made five saves after intermission to hold the lead.
