COLLEGE STATION, TX – LMU softball put up a fight but couldn't quite close the gap in a 6-2 loss to No. 5 Texas A&M.
The Lions had a slow start, getting a hit from
Sakora Harvell in the first but leaving her stranded. The Aggies capitalized early, bringing in two runs in the bottom of the inning off an RBI and another on a fielder's choice.
The Aggies extended their lead in the second with a three-run burst, including a two-run homer, to make it 5-0. LMU's defense settled in after that, but the damage was done.
The Lions bats finally broke through in the third.
Arianna Jaurequi doubled to get things rolling, and
Izzy Jamgotchian knocked her in with another double.
Analiah Lummus kept the momentum going with an RBI double of her own, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
TAMU tacked on one more run in the third, but LMU's pitching held firm the rest of the way. The Lions had chances to score when Lummus stayed hot with a pair of hits, and Harvell, Lambert, and
Jaida Fulcher all reached base, but clutch hits were hard to come by.
Even with the late push in the seventh, LMU couldn't bring any more runs across. The Lions outhit their opponents 9-8, leaving too many runners stranded to complete the comeback.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow for the series' final game.
