SACRAMENTO
— LMU took both games of Saturday's doubleheader against the Sacramento State Hornets, securing a 6-3 win in Game 1 and a 6-4 victory in Game 2.
Game 1:
Both teams struggled to generate early offense, with LMU leaving runners stranded in the second and third innings. The Hornets capitalized on an LMU error in the third, scoring two unearned runs to take the lead.
The Lions responded in the fourth with back-to-back home runs from
Sakora Harvell and
Mika Chong to even the score at 2-2. The momentum continued as
Analiah Lummus and
Meeya Johnson reached base, setting up
Jasmine Sofowora for a two-run double that put LMU ahead 4-2.
Lummus added to the lead in the fifth, driving in Chong with a double down the left-field line. Sacramento State trimmed the deficit with a solo homer in the sixth, but LMU tacked on an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI from
Emma Gutierrez.
The Hornets threatened in the final inning, loading the bases, but the Lions' defense came up big, turning a game-ending double play to secure the win.
Game 2:
Sacramento State struck first, scoring single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead.
LMU's offense came alive in the sixth with a six-run explosion.
Justine Lambert and
Arianna Jaurequi led off with singles, and after a strikeout, Harvell's base hit loaded the bases. Chong delivered in the clutch with a two-run double to tie the game. Lummus followed with a two-RBI single to give LMU its first lead at 4-2.
After a Sac State pitching change, Gutierrez added another single, and Sofowora came off the bench to deliver a key two-run double, capping the rally at 6-2.
The Hornets fought back in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the deficit to 6-4, but LMU's bullpen held firm. Jesisca Hubbard took the circle in the seventh, recording two strikeouts and a groundout to lock down the win.
