LONG BEACH, CA – The Lions dropped both games on the final day of the Louisville Slugger Invitational, falling 4-3 to the Cal Poly Mustangs and 8-0 to the Long Beach State Beaches.
Game one:
The Mustangs got on the board first in inning one, but the Lions jumped ahead in the top of the second inning when
Arianna Jaurequi doubled, followed by a hit-by-pitch and a walk to load the bases.
Analiah Lummus then delivered the biggest hit of the day for LMU, smashing a three-run double to clear the bases and put the Lions up 3-1.
The Lions held the lead through the middle innings, with solid defense keeping Cal Poly off the board in the second, third, and fourth innings.
However, Cal Poly mounted a comeback in the bottom of the fifth earning three runs and taking the lead, 4-3.
The Lions had an opportunity in the sixth to mount a comeback but weren't able to get any runs.
Another opportunity for LMU came in the seventh inning, but once again, the Mustangs' defense held strong, and they won the game.
Game two:
The game began as a pitcher's duel, with both teams unable to break through in the first two Early on, it was a pitcher's duel, with both teams struggling to generate offense.
Mika Chong sparked a chance for LMU in the second with a single, but the Lions couldn't capitalize.
LBSU broke the deadlock in the third after back-to-back runners reached base. A passed ball moved both into scoring position, setting up a clutch two-RBI single that put the home team ahead 2-0.
LMU had an opportunity in the fourth when
Arianna Jaurequi doubled, but a strikeout ended the threat. The Lions kept getting runners on but couldn't find the key hit to bring them home.
LBSU tacked on another run in the fifth with an RBI single, extending their lead to 3-0. The game slipped away in the sixth as the Beach strung together a series of hits, including a two-RBI double and another two-run knock to right-center, sealing an 8-0 win.
The Lions play again Wednesday, Mar. 5, against the Cal Baptist Lancers at 6 PM at Smith Field.
