LOS ANGELES – LMU dominated Northern Colorado on Saturday, securing a 17-9 victory in game one and a 6-4 win in game two at Smith Field.
Game one:
The Bears came out swinging, putting up a four runs in the first, capped off by a three-run homer. LMU got on the board in the second, thanks to a solo shot from
Izzy Jamgotchian, but the Lions really gained momentum in the third.
Meeya Johnson kicked things off with a double, and
Justine Lambert followed with one of her own to bring in a run. That set the stage for
Arianna Jaurequi, who launched a three-run bomb, giving LMU its first lead of the day, 5-4. A Northern Colorado error let another run cross, making it 6-4 at the end of the inning.
After the Bears reclaimed the lead in the fourth, Jaurequi came up clutch again, blasting a two-run shot to tie things at 8-8. From there, the Lions just kept piling it on. LMU sent 13 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, exploding for 10 runs.
UNC scored another run in the fifth, but
Emma Gutierrez put the finishing touch on the offensive, launching a solo homer to seal the 17-9 mercy rule victory.
Jaurequi led the Lions with two homers and five RBI's. Lambert stayed hot at the plate with three hits and three runs, while Poole added three RBIs of her own.
Lindsay O'Dell was the winning pitcher.
Game two:
Things started off a little rocky for LMU, as UNC jumped ahead early with a solo homer in the first, but the Lions didn't stay down for long. In the second, Jamgotchian sent one over the fence to tie things up, and
Sakora Harvell's baserunning put LMU ahead 2-1.
The back-and-forth battle continued in the third and at the bottom of the inning,
Mika Chong launched a solo shot to push LMU's lead to 4-2. The Bears responded in the fourth with a two-run homer to even things up again, but that was the last time they'd cross the plate.
The Lions offense struck again in the fifth, with Jamgotchian blasting her second homer of the day, gaining two RBIs. The Lions defense held strong the rest of the way, with O'Dell closing things out in the circle.
Jamgotchian led the team with two home runs and three RBIs, while Harvell racked up three hits.
The Lions and Bears will face off again Sunday at 10 AM at Smith Field.
