Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Lions Go 2-0 Saturday with wins over Pomona-Pitzer and #8 UC Davis

IRVINE, Calif. – The #14 LMU women's water polo team won both games on Saturday in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. The Lions opened the day with a win over Pomona-Pitzer, 14-8. Then they followed that with an 11-8 win over #8 UC Davis.
 
GAME 1: #14 LMU 14, Pomona-Pitzer 8
 
After falling behind, Sophia DeMattia tied the game for the Lions on the ensuing possession. Pomona-Pitzer took a second lead and again LMU had a response as Taylor Enright tied the game at 2-all. In the closing seconds of the period, the Sagehens scored on a powerplay to take a 3-2 lead.
 
LMU tied the game with a second DeMattia goal at the 6:55 mark of the second. After Pomona-Pitzer scored again, Carolina Magano and DeMattia each scored to give LMU a 5-4 lead at the half.
 
The lead extended to 7-4 as Magano and Anna Tarantino scored early in the second half. What turned into a 5-1 quarter for the Lions, LMU scored the final three goals of the period as Magano, DeMattia, and Yanah Gerber allowed the Lions to double up Pomona-Pitzer, 10-5 after three quarters.
 
Gerber extended the lead to 11-5 after converting a powerplay and Ruth Arino Ruiz and Kawehi Kaauahi made it 13-5 with a pair of even-strengthed goals. Pomona-Pitzer scored three of the final four goals of the game, with London Boyd's score at the 28 second mark giving LMU their 14th goal of the game.
 
Alyssa Barnuevo played the first 29 minutes in the cage and made nine saves. Talia Herbermann closed out the action in the final three minutes.
 
GAME 2: #14 LMU 11 vs. #8 UC Davis 8
 
Anna Tarantino scored the game's first goal before UC Davis responded with the next two. Ruth Arino Ruiz tied the game at 2-all before the period ended.
 
The Aggies scored the first goal of the second quarter before the Lions rattled off four in a row. Arino Ruiz scored a pair, Yanah Gerber and Tarantino each added one apiece to make it a 6-3 game at the half.
 
The Lions scored the first three goals of the second half to triple their lead on the Aggles, 9-3. Carolina Magano scored a pair including a converted penalty shot, and Mikayla Lopez scored at even strength. UC Davis answered with the next three to cut their deficit in half.
 
UC Davis pulled within two just a minute and 15 into the fourth quarter before Gerber and Arino Ruiz built the cushion back up for LMU. The Aggies added a final goal as time expired.
 
Alyssa Barnuevo played all 32 minutes in the cage and made a season-high 14 saves.

The wins means that LMU will play in the ninth-place game on Saturday against #10 Arizona State at 1:00 PM.
