LOS ANGELES - The Lions struggled to keep pace with the No. 14 Duke Blue Devils, falling 9-1 in five innings on Tuesday afternoon at Smith Field.
Duke wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, putting up four runs in the first inning.
Jessica Hubbard battled through the frame but was relieved by
Lindsay O'Dell to start the second inning.
O'Dell faced early trouble as Duke added three more runs in the second. A few plays later, they added another RBI extending their lead 7-0.
LMU found a spark in the bottom of the inning when
Cristina Jones reached on a fielding error, allowing
Arianna Jaurequi to cross home for the Lions lone run of the day.
The Blue Devils continued to apply pressure in the third inning after hitting a home run, earning two more runs, and leading 9-1.
LMU's best scoring opportunity came in the fifth when
Sydney Poole and
Izzy Jamgotchian worked back-to-back walks with two outs. However, the Lions couldn't cash in as a lineout ended the game due to the mercy rule.
The Lions next match is this weekend as they head to Palm Springs, CA, for the Mary Nutter Invitational.
