Lions Take Down Utes and Gauchos

FRESNO, CA – The Lions finished day two of the Fresno State Kickoff Classic with a 12-3 win over the Utah Utes and a 5-1 win over the UCSB Gauchos.

Game 1:

The Utes got on the board first, scoring twice at the bottom of the inning, but the Lions followed suit in the second when Arianna Jaurequi advanced on a wild pitch, sending Kealani Caster back home. LMU scored again when Cristina Jones singled, sending Jaida Fulcher to home plate, and the score was 2-2 at the end of the inning.

Jessica Hubbard kept Utah off the board the next three innings, but the Lions also struggled to break through against Utah's pitching, managing just a single in both the third and fourth innings.

Inning six, the Lions took over and took advantage of all of Utah's mishaps. A throwing error allowed the go-ahead run to score, and the Lions didn't look back. Caster drove in another run with a single, followed by an RBI hit from Jaurequi. Meeya Johnson delivered the biggest blow, a three-run double that extended LMU's lead to 9-2.

The Utes added another run at the bottom of the sixth, but LMU added more insurance at the seventh.

With two Lions on the bases, Izzy Jamgotchian crushed a three-run homer, sealing the dominant, 12-3, win for the Lions.

Justine Lambert, Sydney Poole, Caster and Fulcher all led the Lions with two runs, while Jamgotchian led with three RBIs and the lone homer.

Game 2:

LMU's offense got off to a promising start in the first inning when Lambert doubled, followed by a single from Poole. However, the Lions were unable to push across any runs.

Lindsay O'Dell set the tone early, striking out two UCSB batters and leaving a pair of runners stranded to keep the game scoreless after one.

After a quiet second and third inning, LMU finally broke through in the top of the fourth when Analiah Lummus reached on an error giving Caster the unearned run and getting the Lions on the board. A few plays later Johnson and Jaurequi both scored putting LMU up 3-0.

The Lions continued to add to their score in the fifth inning when Caster singled to get an RBI by sending Sakora Harvell home. LMU tacked on their final run in the sixth inning to make it, 5-0.

The Lions will play again tomorrow at 10 AM against the Gauchos on the third and final day of the tournament.
