FRESNO, CA – The Lions dropped both games on the first day of the Fresno State Kickoff Classic, falling 9-0 to the Utah Utes and 6-1 to the host, Fresno State Bulldogs.
Game 1:
Lindsay O'Dell held Utah scoreless through the first two innings, working out of trouble with runners on base. At the bottom of the second,
Sakora Harvell sparked some momentum for LMU, with a double-down leadoff. However, the Utes defense held firm, keeping the Lions scoreless.
The Utes got on the board first in the third inning, leading the Lions by two, 2-0. LMU responded with a single from
Sydney Poole and a single from
Justine Lambert in the bottom half, but their momentum was halted.
Mina Tala took over pitching duties in the fourth and held Utah scoreless, but the Utes erupted in the fifth inning, scoring five runs. Utah scored two more runs in the sixth inning and ultimately won.
Lambert and
Jaida Fulcher led the Lions with two hits each while Fulcher and Harvell had one double each.
Game 2:
LMU wasted no time getting on the board. Lambert led off the game with a single. A few plays later, Harvell delivered a sacrifice fly, sending Lambert back home and giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.
Jessica Hubbard did great on the mound, recording a pair of strikeouts and kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard through two innings.
In the third inning, FSU broke through when they hit a solo home run and tied the game at 1-1. The Bulldogs then took control in the fourth , scoring two more runs
LMU could not answer in the fifth inning, but Fresno State added another run on a fielder's choice bunt, making it 4-1. They scored two more runs in the sixth, making it 6-1.
LMU had one last opportunity in the seventh inning, but could not generate a rally.
