Lions Roll Past Idaho State to Close Out Bank of Hawai‘i Classic

MANOA, Hawai'i — LMU closed out the Bank of Hawai'i Classic with a dominant 71–52 win over Idaho State on Sunday afternoon at Bankoh Arena in the Stan Sheriff Center, marking their highest point total of the season.

Jess Lawson set the tone offensively, leading the Lions with 23 points on 7-for-13 shooting while nearly recording a double-double with nine rebounds. Carly Heidger added 14 points and five boards while knocking down two triples, and Maya Hernandez contributed 17 points on 7-for-13 shooting with five rebounds. Andjela Matic rounded out the balanced attack with 10 points.

LMU opened with early buckets from Hernandez and Lawson to take a 4–0 lead before Heidger's free throws pushed it to 6–0. The Bengals were held scoreless until the 6:52 mark. Idaho State made a small push late, but a steal by Hernandez and a rebound by Lawson secured a 13–11 LMU lead after one.

The Lions extended their advantage early in the second quarter with continued defensive pressure. A steal from Heidger led to a transition layup assisted by Krajina, making it 15–12. Moments later, Matic sparked a mini run with a fast-break layup and converted the and-one to push the lead to 18–12. Heidger added three more free throws in a 30-second span to make it 21–14, stabilizing LMU's offense. Through five games, Heidger owns a team-best .850 free-throw mark on 20 attempts.

Idaho State made a push, but Hernandez answered with a strong finish inside, and Lawson converted two fast-break free throws to restore a 27–18 lead. After ISU pulled within three, Heidger drilled a top-of-the-key three at the 2:09 mark, sending LMU into halftime up 32–27.

The third quarter was quiet as both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm. The Bengals and Lions both scored eight to set the stage for the fourth.

LMU broke the game open in the final frame. Idaho State was forced into rushed possessions and turnovers, and the Lions converted those opportunities into transition points. LMU held ISU to 17 fourth-quarter points while delivering its most productive period of the season, scoring 31 in the frame.

Lawson ignited the run with back-to-back transition finishes off turnovers to give LMU its first double-digit lead. Hernandez added multiple second-chance buckets, including tip-ins and putbacks, to extend LMU's momentum. Heidger finished a perfect 9-for-9 from the line, while Matic added steady play with 10 points, four rebounds, and key free throws during LMU's late surge.

Up next, the Lions continue their road stretch at CSU Fullerton on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 5:00 p.m. (PT).
