LONG BEACH, Calif. – It took all seven periods to decide a winner in Thursday night's final regular season road matchup against Long Beach State. The Lions erased a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime and sudden death before The Beach ultimately pulled ahead to win 16-15.
Abel Romero Corbalan started the scoring in the first quarter. Long Beach State responded by scoring four of the final five goals of the period to take a 4-2 lead.
Tommaso Baldineti's goal at 3:46 tied the game at 2-all before LBSU closed out the period with the final two.
The second quarter only featured two goals as Baldineti responded to a goal by the home team to bring the score to 5-3 at intermission.
The Beach built up a 7-3 lead less than a minute and a half into the third quarter before Romero Corbalan stopped the run with his goal at the 6:17 mark. After Long Beach State rebuilt their four-goal advantage, Romero Corbalan cut the deficit in half with back-to-back goals.
The comeback started in the fourth quarter as
Alika Naone and
Soren Martin scored back-to-back goals to pull the Lions within one with 6:45 to play in regulation. The two sides traded off scoring the next four goals as LMU kept trying to tie game. Both Romero Robalan and
Richie Rimlinger pulled the Lions within one. Naone converted a powerplay with 2:29 on the clock to tie the game at 12-all and force overtime.
Baldineti scored first in the first overtime session to give LMU their first lead since 1-0. LBSU followed with the next two goals to lead 15-14 after five sessions of play.
Goals from
Nico Furneaux and
Roman Saroyan gave LMU a goal advantage with 53 seconds left in double overtime. Long Beach State tied the score at 15-15 with 12 ticks on the clock left, forcing sudden death.
The home side struck first in the sudden death session, scoring with 1:47 on the clock to take the game.
Finn Friedland played all 41 minutes in the cage and made 10 saves.
The Lions will close out the regular season on Saturday against UC Irvine. This will be the final home game for several members of the senior class. Prior to the game, LMU will recognize those seniors.
