LOS ANGELES – The Lions came up short against the Oregon State Beavers on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-1 at Gill Coliseum.
Set one was a battle early, with the Beavers going up 7-5 after a quick four-point run. A kill from
Sophie Stephenson got the Lions rolling again, and a big run capped by a
Mariana Simao kill helped LMU pull ahead, 22-15. OSU tried to rally late, but the Lions held on to take the opener, 25-23.
The Beavers came out strong in set two, jumping ahead 10-2 after a nine-point streak. The Lions started to chip away, cutting it to three behind a solo block from Simao and even grabbing a brief lead, but Oregon State closed it out, 25-17.
Set three went back and forth the whole way.
Maddie Boerstra's early kill gave LMU a small edge, and later her clutch finish sparked a 3-0 run to make it 23-22, but OSU took the final two points to go up 2-1 in the match.
The fourth set had a similar story with Oregon State jumping ahead 10-2, but the Lions kept fighting. A 6-0 run, started by a Stephenson kill and finished with one from
Leah Burrell, cut it to 22-17. LMU went on another late push, but the Beavers closed things out to take the match.
The Lions are back in action Thursday, Nov. 13, when they host the Santa Clara Broncos in Gersten Pavilion.
