LOS ANGELES—The Lions fell short against the Santa Clara Broncos on Thursday night, 67-60. They turned it on in the fourth quarter but ran out of time to close the gap.
Three Lions hit double figures in the game.
Brandi Williams led with 15 points, while
Naudia Evans put up 13 points, nine rebounds, and three assists.
Maya Hernandez added 10 points and nine boards.
The first quarter was tight, with three ties before the Broncos went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead.
Carly Heidger hit a three-pointer to spark a mini-run that got the Lions within one. Hernandez scored at the buzzer, but Santa Clara still led 14-13.
The second quarter was all Broncos, who shot an impressive 62.5% from the field and outscored LMU 25-13. By halftime, the Lions were down 39-26.
Santa Clara opened the third quarter with four straight points, but the Lions kept battling. LMU only shot 41.7% from the field but was solid at the free-throw line, hitting 66.7%, while the Broncos didn't get to the line at all. Even so, the Lions entered the fourth down by 11.
In the final stretch, LMU kept pushing. A three from Heidger and a layup by Hernandez cut the deficit to nine. With 25 seconds left, Williams nailed a three to bring the Lions within seven, but it wasn't enough to turn the tide.
The Lions next game is Saturday, Jan. 25, at 2 PM against the Washington State Cougars.
