DALLAS - The Lions opened day one of the SMU Doubletree Classic with a 3-1 victory over the Weber State Wildcats.
The Wildcats took an early lead in set one, going on a 4-0 run and leading the Lions 6-2. A Weber State service error sparked a four-point rally, bringing the Lions within one at 7-6. LMU took the lead when
Jiana Lawson's kill, assisted by
Mia Schafer, made it 12-11. Consecutive kills by
Paige Flickinger and
Olivia Toland forced Weber State into a timeout. The Wildcats closed the gap to 23-21 late in the set, but Flickinger secured the set win for LMU, 25-22, with a clutch kill.
In set two, the Wildcats jumped ahead again, 5-1, but the Lions bounced back. A Toland kill gave LMU a 9-8 lead, which they extended to 14-10 after a four-point streak sparked by a Lawson kill. Following a Weber State ace, three straight errors gave LMU the upper hand and a kill from
Sophia Meyers secured the set, 25-19.
The Lions started strong in set three, leading 3-0, but Weber State responded with a five-point run, followed by another 3-0 run to take an 8-4 lead. LMU tied it at 9-9 after four consecutive points fueled by a
Kaitlyn Evans kill, but Weber State pulled ahead again and won the set, 25-19.
The Lions jumped out to their largest lead of the game early in set four, scoring eight straight points and forcing a Wildcats timeout. Evans followed with back-to-back kills, extending LMU's lead to 11-2 and prompting Weber State to burn their second timeout. Although Weber State made a brief push with three consecutive kills, they still trailed 15-9. LMU kept their momentum, and Lawson's final kill sealed the set, 25-20, and the match, 3-1.
The Lions will face Milwaukee in their next match tomorrow, Sept. 6, at 1 PM in Dallas, TX.
