LOS ANGELES – The LMU Lions swept the UC San Diego Tritons, 3-0, Friday night on day two of the Lions/Trojans Invitational.
In the opening set, the Tritons struck first, but a few plays later,
Paige Flickinger's kill started a 4-0 run that gave LMU a 5-3 lead. The Lions extended their advantage to eight points following a kill by
Leah Burrell. Although UCSD responded with a five-point streak, they still trailed 14-11. LMU maintained their momentum, eventually securing their largest lead of seven points after a
Kaitlyn Evans kill, closing the first set 25-19.
The Lions came out strong in the second set, quickly jumping to a 9-2 lead with four consecutive kills. LMU pushed their lead to eight, 19-11, midway through the set after a powerful block by Evans and
Olivia Toland. UCSD attempted a comeback, scoring six straight points, but couldn't close the gap. A kill from
Sophia Meyers, assisted by
Mia Schafer, clinched the second set for LMU, 25-20.
LMU kept up their intensity in the third set, starting with three straight points. The Lions went on two 3-0 runs, capped by another Meyers kill, giving them a 14-7 lead. Despite the Tritons narrowing the gap to four points, it wasn't enough, as LMU secured the final set 25-20, completing the sweep.
Flickinger shined with a .526 hitting percentage, recording 11 kills with just one error. Meyers led all players with 11 digs, closely followed by
Sam Hastings with 10. Schafer dominated in assists with 22, while Evans contributed five blocks.
