LOS ANGELES – The LMU men's soccer team held No. 1 West Virginia scoreless in a 0-0 draw on Tuesday night at Sullivan Field.
The Lions and Mountaineers were replaying their exciting Elite Eight match from 2023 that ended in a 3-1 victory for West Virginia. Tuesday's match could not have been more different.
The Mountaineers commanded the majority of possession and there would be no scoring in the first half, let alone either half.
LMU's best opportunities came through Anthony Wilson flying up the left wing and firing a long-range effort and through
Kayvon Monfared, who was a menace up top. Monfared used his length and speed to make long runs in and tried to find players in the middle with low crosses.
Ky Mani Dade notched his first collegiate clean sheet in the match. The sophomore made five saves with the biggest one coming on a free kick in the first half. The Mountaineers set up just outside the box and fired in a curling free kick that looked like it was destined to go in at the far post. Dade dove to his left and used a strong right hand to push the ball away. The follow up chance went off target.
The backline of Nathan Rodrigues, Braden Fidelak,
Tyler Trusner and
Adrien Gameiro deserve a lot of credit as well. The center halves were strong and ventured out of their areas with tact to make clearances while the wide backs were especially adept at creating turnovers and driving forward to produce offense.
LMU is back in action against Cal State Fullerton on Friday night in Fullerton, Calif. The match will begin at 7:00 p.m. (PT) and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
