BERKELEY, CA – LMU fell short to No. 20 Cal Bears Saturday afternoon, with a score of 6-0 in the first game and 3-2 in the second.
Game 1:
The game began sluggishly, with both teams deadlocked at 0-0 through the first three innings. However, in the fourth inning, the Bears broke the silence by securing a hit off
Jenna Perez's pitch, resulting in Cal scoring a run due to a wild pitch.
In the fifth inning,
Mika Chong singled to right field for the Lions, but they failed to convert it into a run. Meanwhile, Cal doubled to left center, earning an RBI and surging ahead 2-0.
Alessandra Samperio stepped in to relieve Perez, aiming to stem the Bears' momentum. Nevertheless, Cal added four more runs in the sixth inning, securing a 6-0 victory in game one.
Game 2:
In the second game, the Lions' starting pitcher,
Savannah Hooks, held the Bears at bay in the first inning. It was Cal who struck first with a left-field home run in the bottom of the second, taking a 1-0 lead. They extended their lead to 2-0 later in the inning with another run. Another home run in the third inning widened the gap. The game remained stagnant for the next two innings until the Lions managed a hit in the fourth, courtesy of Chong.
However, the sixth inning altered the course of the game for the Lions.
Elisa Rosado entered as a pinch runner for Chong after she walked.
Izzy Jamgotchian's single to right field advanced Rosado.
Cristina Jones then replaced Jamgotchian as a pinch runner. Jones stole second, setting the stage for
Kealani Caster, whose single brought Rosado home, putting the Lions on the scoreboard. A subsequent fly out by
Jasmine Sofowora allowed Jones to score, narrowing the gap to 3-2.
Despite one final opportunity for a comeback, the Lions couldn't capitalize, recording three outs in the top of the seventh, resulting in a 3-2 loss.
The Lions will continue the series tomorrow at 1 PM in Berkeley, CA.
