Lions Set Single-Season Hit By Pitch Record Against Portland

LOS ANGELES – The Lions ninth inning rally came up just short in a 7-6 loss to Portland on Saturday evening at Page Stadium.

The Lions battled furiously in the last few innings, loading the bases on multiple occasions, but the comeback bid came to an end with the tying run on second base.

A pair of sacrifice flies from Robbie Ayers and Brett Zimmermann brought the Lions inches closer before Christian Dicochea drove a double over the Pilots' right fielder's head to plate one more. With Dicochea on second, Sam Biller laced a ball that happened to be right at the second baseman.

Diego Baqueiro had three hits in the outing, plating one and scoring two more.

The Lions have entered the annals of school history for a rather auspicious stat. With two hit batsmen tonight and one last night, the 2024 LMU baseball team has tied the single season hit by pitch record. Grant Weiss was the record-breaker, wearing a 2-0 pitch on his walk down to first in the seventh inning.

The Lions and Pilots will finish up the series on Sunday, April 27 with first pitch scheduled at 1:05 p.m. (PT).
