Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Lions Keep Concordia Scoreless for over 22 minutes to Advance in GCC Championships

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – LMU women's water polo proved to be every bit of the top seed in Friday's opening round of the 2024 Golden Coast Conference Championship. The sixth-ranked Lions did not allow a goal until the final two minutes of the third quarter to secure a wire-to-wire win, 13-3, and advance to Saturday's semifinals.

It took just 17 seconds for LMU to take their first lead, with Noa Sasover scoring on the team's opening possession. Ruth Arino Ruiz and Lior Ben David each added first period goals to extend LMU's lead to 3-0 through one.

Anna Tarantino scored in the first 14 seconds of the second quarter to add to the lead. A penalty conversion by Tarantino and goals from Skye Nankervis and Yanah Gerber pushed the Lions ahead 7-0.

With the first four goals of the second half, the lead ballooned to 11-0. Gerber and Arino Ruiz each scored their second goals of the game and Carolina Magano with the next two scores by herself. With 1:47 on the clock, Concordia scored their first goal of the game.

Kawehi Kauahi and Taylor Enright pushed the Lions ahead by a dozen with their goals in the fourth quarter. The Golden Eagles scored twice over the final two minutes before the game went final.

Inbar Geva recorded her 100th save of the season in her first half shutout. Madison Davis recorded a pair of saves with her two periods of play in the second half.

Concordia was held to 16.7 percent shooting in the game, compared to 50 percent shooting for the Lions.

The Lions will face San Diego State on Saturday for a 4:00 PM semifinal matchup.
