LOS ANGELES – The comeback came up just short as the LMU baseball team fell to Saint Mary's 8-7 on Saturday night at Page Stadium.Â
Â
The game time was moved from 4:00 p.m. (PT) to 6:00 p.m. and then again to 6:30 because of rain in the area.Â
Â
The Gaels scored first in the top of the first with a pair of runs before the Lions answered right back with three of their own. Christian Dicochea led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle before advancing to second when Sam Biller walked. Benny Casillas continued his hot streak with a single down the right field line that resulted in a run scoring and an out at second when there was some confusion on the base paths.
Brendan Bobo followed with a two-run, opposite field blast to give the Lions an early lead. Â
Â
The Gaels answered in the third with two runs to take the lead. They ended up extending the lead with one in the fifth as well.Â
Â
Casillas drove in another run with an RBI single in the fifth to cut back into the lead. Dicochea scored from second on the play and Biller moved up to third.Â
Â
The Gaels got three in the sixth to mark an 8-4 advantage.Â
Â
The Lions continued to claw their way back into it. Â
Â
They scored one in the sixth when the defense could not handle a hard hit ball, once again off the bat of Casillas with the bases loaded. Â
Â
They scored one in the eighth to push the deficit to two. Casillas came up with the bases loaded again and reached on a fielder's choice to second base. Some good baserunning by Biller allowed Casillas enough time to reach first safely.Â
Â
In the ninth, the Lions got the winning run to second but could not provide a walkoff for the second consecutive night.
Daalen Adderley reached after being hit by a pitch to open the inning.
Andrew Grenert drew a walk as a pinch hitter before
Robbie Ayers slapped a single through the right side to score Adderley. Dicochea grounded into a fielder's choice before stealing second representing the winning run. The Lions could not scratch across another run to force extra innings or win it.Â
