Lions Split Doubleheader

FRESNO, CA – The Lions played a doubleheader against the Fresno State Bulldogs Saturday afternoon and beat them, 7-4, in the first game and then lost, 4-3, in the second.

Game 1:

The Lions burst out of the gates, seizing an early lead by scoring a run in the opening inning, courtesy of Ariana Jaurequi's single through the left side that brought Lauryn Carter home.

In the second inning, Jasmine Sofowora's single to right center, followed by a stolen base, set the stage for Val Pero's double, bringing Sofowora across home plate. The Lions continued their offensive onslaught with two more runs in the inning, extending their lead over the Bulldogs to 5-0.

Maintaining their momentum in the fourth inning, the Lions added another run when Hayley Olivas crossed the plate. However, Fresno State managed to put two runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning, narrowing the deficit to 5-2.

Despite a pitching change by the Bulldogs in the sixth inning to halt the Lions progress, LMU remained relentless. Sakora Harvell's double to left center allowed Olivas to score again, and Harvell later crossed home plate on a fielder's choice.

Although the Bulldogs managed to add two more runs, LMU emerged victorious with a final score of 7-4. Jenna Perez claimed the win as the pitcher, bringing her season record to 8-6.

Game 2:

Once again, the Lions took an early lead as Izzy Jamgotchian singled to center field, allowing Lauryn Carter to score a run. However, at the bottom of the inning, the Bulldogs turned the tide with a home run, securing two runs and taking a 2-1 lead. Fresno State added another run in the third inning.

In the fourth inning, Mika Chong's walk to first base set the stage for the Lions' offensive push. Shortly after, Jamgotchian doubled, bringing Chong home, but the Lions still trailed 3-2. Savannah Hooks took over pitching duties from Lindsay O'Dell in the bottom of the inning, successfully stifling the Bulldogs' offense in the fifth inning.

In the top of the sixth, the Lions managed to knot the score at 3-3, intensifying the competition.

The game extended into one extra inning, during which the Bulldogs capitalized on an unearned run, securing a 4-3 victory.
