Los Angeles – The Lions swept the San Jose State Spartans, 6-1 and 5-0 in Saturday's doubleheader.
Game 1:
The opening inning began slowly, with both teams managing just one hit each, but failing to score any runs. However, it was the second inning that truly sparked the game.
In the bottom half of the inning,
Izzy Jamgotchian kickstarted the Lions momentum with a solo home run, putting them ahead by one. Shortly after,
Lauryn Carter walked to first base, later stealing second.
Jasmine Sofowora then delivered a powerful hit to right field, resulting in both Carter and herself crossing home plate, extending LMU's lead to 3-0.
LMU added another run when
Val Pero singled to center field, allowing Carter to score once more.
Jenna Perez effectively shut down the Spartans, keeping them scoreless through the first four innings. Although one run was earned in the fifth inning, the Lions added two more runs later in the game, securing a 6-1 victory. Carter led with three runs, while Sofowora led with two RBIs.
Game 2:
Lindsay O'Dell kicked off the second game with impressive pitching, holding the Spartans scoreless and allowing only one hit in the first three innings. The momentum shifted in the fourth inning for LMU.
In the bottom of the fourth, Ariana Jaurequi ignited the Lions offense with a double to center field, advancing to third. Adele Bruin's fly out to center field allowed Jaurequi to dash home, putting the Lions ahead 1-0. Carter's subsequent home run added two more runs, extending the lead to 3-0.
A standout moment occurred when Jamgotchian stepped up and promptly hit a home run, earning two RBIs with support from
Adele Braun. This marked Jamgotchian's fifth homer of the season. O'Dell maintained her dominance, keeping the Spartans scoreless through the seventh inning, securing a 5-0 victory for LMU.
Jamgotchian and Carter both contributed two RBIs each, leading the Lions' offense, while Braun showcased stellar defense with 11 putouts, leading both teams.
The Lions will face the Spartans again tomorrow at 12 PM at Smith Field.
