Lions Win Spring Fling Tournament in Honolulu

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HONOLULU, HI – The Lions defeated the Portland State Viking, 5-2, and Tennessee State Tigers, 10-1, on Saturday, making them the 2024 Spring Fling Tournament winners.

Game 1:

Both Jessica Hubbard and Frost of Portland State delivered solid performances in the first inning, allowing just one hit each with no runs scored. Hubbard continued her effective pitching into the second inning, preventing the Vikings from adding any runs to the scoreboard. In the bottom of the second, Hayley Olivas reached base after being hit by a pitch, putting LMU in a favorable position. Mika Chong then singled to right center, advancing Olivas to third. Val Pero's fielder's choice allowed Olivas to score, giving the Lions a one-run lead.

LMU extended their lead in the fourth inning, adding three more runs courtesy of RBIs from Pero and Arianna Jauqueri. Alessandra Samperio took over pitching duties in the top of the fifth inning for Hubbard. Despite the pitching change, the Vikings managed to score two runs. However, LMU responded swiftly in the bottom of the fifth with a home run from Jasmine Sofowora, maintaining a three-run lead at 5-2. The last two innings saw no additional runs, securing the victory for the Lions.

Game 2:

The Lions showcased their dominance against the TSU Tigers in the second game. Despite the Tigers taking an early lead in the first inning, the Lions quickly turned the tide in the second inning. Chong's double to right field drove in Olivas and Cristina Jones, while a subsequent throwing error by the Tigers allowed Chong and Lauryn Carter to score. Elisa Rosado added one more run, concluding the inning with the Lions leading 5-1.

The momentum continued for the Lions as Izzy Jamgotchian hit a home run to center field, contributing to a total of three home runs for LMU in the game, marking a tournament high for the team. Milan Ah Yat and Jaurequi sealed the deal with two more home runs in the sixth inning, securing a convincing 10-1 victory for the Lions.
