LOS ANGELES – No. 13 LMU women's water polo is off to the best start in program history after taking down No. 14 Princeton on Friday night at Burns Aquatics Center. The Lions beat the Tigers, 10-8, in the final non-conference match of the season to move to 20-2 over the team's first 22 games.
After falling behind 1-0 in the opening 45 seconds, LMU rattled off the next four goals to close out the first quarter.
Anna Tarantino scored twice, with
Ruth Arino Ruiz and
Carolina Magano each accounting for one apiece.
Princeton scored an early goal in the second quarter to cut their deficit down to 4-2. That score line stayed true until Arino Ruiz's goal with 23 seconds remaining in the half to make it a 5-2 game at intermission.
The two teams traded off all eight goals in the third quarter with the Lions responding to each Princeton goal.
Noa Sasover,
Yanah Gerber,
Skye Nankervis, and
Lior Ben David all scored in the period.
An opening minute goal from the Tigers was reciprocated on LMU's offensive attack less than a minute later. Nobody would score again until Princeton converted a penalty shot with 23 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to two. The Lions were able to hold the ball for the final seconds and secure the victory.
Inbar Geva made six saves in the cage over the first 16 minutes.
Madison Davis followed with two second half saves to preserve the win.
The Lions play a massive Golden Coast Conference game Saturday, March 23 against Fresno State. The game will be played at noon from Burns Aquatics Center.
The 20 wins in the first 22 games of the season surpasses the 2010 team's 19-2 start. The Lions have now won 13 games in a row.
