Lions Impress with Victory Against Hawkeyes, But Face Nail-Biting Defeat from Stanford

PALO ALTO, CA – On Sunday's doubleheader, the Lions achieved a split with a decisive 14-1 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes and a narrow 1-0 loss to the 9th-ranked Stanford.

Game 1:

In the opening inning, Jenna Perez showcased an impressive performance, keeping the Hawkeyes at bay with no hits or runs. The Lions wasted no time in responding during their offensive half, as Avery Francis initiated the action with a well-timed single. Following her, Arianna Jaqueri and Mika Chong also singled, with Jaqueri advancing on a wild pitch. Francis returned home, giving the Lions a two-run advantage.

The pivotal second inning solidified LMU's victory. Accumulating seven hits and scoring 12 runs, the Lions dominated. The standout moment came from Kealani Caster, who secured four RBIs with a grand slam home run. Heading into the third inning, LMU held a commanding 14-0 lead.
Despite the Hawkeyes managing to score a run in the fifth inning, their efforts fell short against the Lions, resulting in a final score of 14-1.

Game 2:

In the second match, Lindsay O'Dell and the Lions defensive efforts were excellent, limiting Stanford to just two hits and zero runs in the initial four innings. While the Lions managed to secure hits from Francis, Jaurequi, Chong, and Val Pero in the first four innings, unfortunately, none translated into runs.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Cardinals made a breakthrough, doubling and gaining an RBI, thereby taking a one-run lead over the Lions. Despite the Lions attempting a comeback in the sixth inning with another hit from Chong, it proved fruitless. In the end, the Cardinals clinched the victory with a narrow margin, winning 1-0.

The Lions next game is Mar. 16 against the UCLA Bruins.
