LA JOLLA, Calif. – In the highly competitive UCSD Triton Invitational, LMU women's water polo won three games against teams ranked fifth, 12
th, and 13
th nationally to earn ninth place in the tournament with a 3-1 record. In Sunday's final game, the #11 Lions defeated #13 Long Beach State for the second time this season, winning 10-9.
Noa Sasover and
Skye Nankervis pushed the Lions ahead to a 2-0 lead to start the game. The Beach cut their deficit in half before
Anna Tarantino increased the lead back up to two goals. Long Beach State scored twice over the last two and a half minutes with a pair of powerplay goals to tie the game at 3-3.
LBSU went ahead for the first time to open the second period. Late in the quarter,
Ruth Arino Ruiz gave LMU the lead back before The Beach answered in on their ensuing possession to take a 5-4 halftime lead.
Lior Ben David scored on LMU's opening possession of the third quarter to tie the game at 5-all. The two sides traded off all seven goals of the quarter with Long Beach State taking a brief lead and LMU answering with the tying goal to eventually get up to 8-8. Sasover,
Carolina Magano, and Nankervis all scored in the quarter.
The Spanish pair of Arino Ruiz and Magano pushed LMU ahead by two goals in the fourth quarter. Long Beach State scored with just over two minutes to play but could not get the equalizing goal before time expired.
