LA JOLLA, Calif. – By nature of the tiebreaker rules for the UC San Diego Triton Invitational, LMU women's water polo played against the third-place team out of Bracket A, UC Santa Barbara. The 11
th-ranked Lions defeated the 12
th-ranked Gauchos, 10-5, on Saturday night.
Yanah Gerber opened the game with two goals to put the Lions ahead just a minute and ten into the game. UC Santa Barbara scored in the last minute of the quarter to cut the deficit in half.
After the Gauchos tied the score to open the second,
Lior Ben David,
Ruth Arino Ruiz, and
Skye Nankervis scored the next three goals to close the half and push LMU ahead, 5-2.
UCSB scored twice to open the third period before Arino Ruiz gave the Lions their two-goal cushion back. UC Santa Barbara cut it to 6-5 with 32 seconds remaining in the third.
LMU scored all four goals in the fourth quarter to pull away and secure victory. Nankervis, Arino Ruiz, Sophia Kadifa, and Arino Ruiz again all scored in the period.
